Were you at Asia Pacific Rail 2018 in Hong Kong? Read this quick recap to catch up on the event.
Asia Pacific Rail 2018 took place between 20 – 21 March in Hong Kong. Focussed on bringing the region’s major rail agencies and transport authorities together to discuss innovation, technology and strategy for rail, it is one of Asia’s leading events for the industry.
If you were not able to attend Asia Pacific Rail, here’s a quick summary of what happened:
There are a significant number of rail projects happening in the Asia Pacific region in the next 3 to 6 years (over 20 projects across metro, mainline and high speed rail were featured at the event) and it is clear that everyone is keen to see the investment in rail pay off.
There was a strong buzz in the air for better ways of running rail businesses. This was a common theme, despite the wide scope of needs and challenges that were raised in discussions on different aspects of rail.
For example, there was a significant drive towards asset reliability and predictive decision support systems – not just basic operational maintenance management modules for handling work orders and inventory. We definitely got the sense that the rail industry is looking to move towards condition-based and performance-based maintenance, and to move rapidly.
There was a fantastic diversity of event attendees, with delegates from all levels in the organisational structure as well as a real Who’s Who in rail present. We met rail owners and operators; governments, authorities and regulators; consultants, contractors and system integrators; and industry media.
Far from being a Asia Pacific-only affair, the event was attended by delegates from all over the world including familiar faces from Public Transport Victoria (Australia), the Roads and Transport Authority (Dubai, UAE), Sydney Trains and Sound Transit (United States of America). It was especially good to catch up with representatives from Prasarana (Malaysia) and the LTA, SMRT Trains, SBS Transit and MRT Corporation (Singapore).
This wide attendee list meant there were some extremely high quality presentations and debates, as everyone brought a unique perspective and experience to the table. It was impressive to see rail organisations speak frankly about the challenges they faced, how they overcame those issues and their plans for the future. The hosts and panellists encouraged everybody to connect with peers, be transparent and learn from each other, and fostered a great environment for collaboration and discussion.

Asia Pacific Rail 2018 was a great place to learn how leading rail operators like Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation and Taiwan High Speed Rail achieve their admirable performance and reliability results, plus catch up with all of the region’s major stakeholders. It will be interesting to see what will be on show next year!
